Claudette
Queen of HeartsClaudette is part of Claire Daniels’s household and appears at two points of acute danger: after becoming lost in the fog, and as the group escapes the burning estate. Though her own account of the first episode is comic in its terror, her later role in bringing back belongings gives her a concrete place in the household’s survival and recovery.
Household Role and Relationships
Claudette addresses Claire Daniels as Madame, and Claire later thanks her for saving belongings from the fire and promises to send her home on holiday. The exchange presents a familiar household relationship in which Claudette serves Claire, while Claire’s gratitude is expressed through a specific reward. Claudette is also placed alongside Queenie and Belinda during the escape from the estate.
Her return to the cottage brings a brief domestic clash. She learns that Queenie is sleeping in the other bed in her room and objects that Queenie snores loudly. The complaint punctures the immediate relief of being safe: Claudette has escaped one ordeal, only to discover that her night’s rest may be disturbed by her roommate.
Lost in the Fog
Claudette returns to the cottage breathless after being sent away while people questioned her. Having left the house, she loses her way in the fog and cannot tell where she is. She describes something breathing against her and fears that a large animal may devour her; she thinks she has found the cottage by its light, only for it to go out as she approaches. Her account conveys how completely disoriented she has become, without confirming what the animal was or why the light disappeared.
Darcy reassures her that she is safe and can sleep in peace. Claudette’s relief is immediate, but Queenie’s presence in the other bed turns the scene from reassurance to domestic exasperation. The episode establishes her as frightened and expressive rather than as a detached observer of danger, while the surrounding household responds to her with practical comfort.
Escape and Aftermath
During the flight from the flames, Queenie emerges from the trees with Claudette and Belinda following, each with items hanging from a half-shut suitcase. Claire Daniels recognizes that her belongings have been brought along and specifically credits Claudette with saving what she could. The hurried, partly closed suitcase makes the rescue visibly incomplete, but the objects Claudette has managed to recover matter in the immediate aftermath of the fire.
After the group gives statements and leaves the sheriff’s headquarters for Beverly Hills, Claudette travels with Claire Daniels and Queenie. Claire repeats her thanks and says she will send Claudette home on holiday as a treat. Claudette responds deferentially, calling Claire too good. Her last recorded action is thus not another moment of panic but the practical service that earns her employer’s gratitude; the book does not establish what happens to her after the promised holiday.
